Team Member Spotlight: Simon Davies

simon-davies“I have a fundamental belief that drives my work; people working together in cooperation can achieve great things.”

“Dyfal donc a dyr y garreg” – an old welsh saying that translates as ‘constant tapping breaks the stone’, a great wisdom for bringing about sustainable change! My favorite quote from the closest to a ‘business world hero’ is “It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.” W. Edwards Deming

Like my friend and colleague Peter Turgoose, I first met Mark LaScola and OTM when I was at Royal Mail, part of the team charged with transforming the business. I was impressed enough to introduce OTM to subsequent organizations I worked with before moving across to join the OTM team as a consultant in 2008.

My background is in marketing, sales and general management, specializing in turning around underperforming teams, and (later) organizations. I learned the hard (and best) way, through experience, what worked – and what didn’t – and have the metaphorical scars to prove it! OTM brought a conceptual framework and methodology that completely reflected my experience so it was a natural move. Today, I really enjoy the privilege of working with lots of different teams across many organizations, sectors and cultures. There are many constant themes to our work, yet every project has unique challenges, dynamics and experiences.

I have a fundamental belief that drives my work; people working together in cooperation can achieve great things – even beyond our wildest imaginations – look at the great skyscrapers, the International Space Station the ability to fly around this world we inhabit in just a few hours. All of these things made possible by people working together in a collective enterprise towards a common purpose. It is a great buzz to be part of making that happen. In transforming an organization by engaging the talents and brains of people to create innovative, creative solutions and then see the energy and passion it engenders released to make things happen.

The one down-side to doing this work is being away from my family. As much as I enjoy ‘being in the moment’ when we are working with a customer, and experiencing new countries – there is nothing like that feeling of heading home after a trip away. When I’m not working, or ferrying the children to various sporting, social or educational events I can be found spending as much time as I can on my boat, indulging my other passion - sailing.

Working on a project, most likely to say: “where are my teabags?”

Least likely to say “No beer thanks – I’ll stick to the water.”

On The Mark’s experience and passion for collaborative business transformation that’s supported by pragmatism, systems thinking, and a belief in people is unparalleled. OTM has been in business for 26 years and is a global leader in organization design consulting.
